Vikings boys soccer falls to Mashpee in first round of playoffs
The Wareham High School boys soccer team fell to Mashpee High School 6 to 0 in the first round of the division four state tournament Monday, Nov. 3.
“[Mashpee] plays a lot of very good teams during the season and it’s hard to tell when you’re going in to know how good they are,” said Head Coach Evan Wilga. “Obviously we could’ve played better but it’s a big deal for us to make the playoffs.”
The Vikings entered the game as the 45th ranked team in division four after posting a 10 win and 8 loss record during the regular season.
Coming into Monday’s game at Mashpee the Vikings had won four of their last five games and Wilga said preparation for the 20th ranked Mashpee included a lot of rest.
“We got pretty banged up at the end of the season,” he said. “We didn’t know if some guys were going to play tonight but they showed up and played great.”
Making the playoffs was the team’s main goal for the season, Wilga said and senior Boon Ouellette reached his own personal milestone of breaking the record for most goals scored in a season, and a career at Wareham High.
“It was a good season and our second time ever making playoffs,” Ouellette said. “It was a good game and we couldn’t do much more.”
Despite the loss Ouellette said being able to share the field with many of his friends “means a lot.”
“It’s definitely something I’ll remember forever,” he said.
And while next season is a year away, Wilga wants his younger players to take the playoff experience from this year for an even better season next fall.
“I would hope they take it and see what it takes to be able to win a playoff game and mold themselves into players over the next few months and come back hungry next year,” he said.
