Vikings handed No. 4 seed in semi-finals following loss
The Wareham Vikings boys basketball team found itself in an unfamiliar situation Friday night following a loss to Old Rochester Regional High School.
For the first time in recent memory, the Bulldogs defeated the Vikings at home 66 – 62.
“It was a very good high school game by two evenly matched teams,” said Head Coach Kevin Brogioli. “It’s the first time they’ve won here in a long time and I hope to see them in the semi-finals.”
The match marked the last regular game of the season for both teams. Had the Vikings won the team would have earned the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Division III South Sectional tournament.
Instead, Wareham earned the No. 4 seed. The team’s win-loss record overall for the season is 18 – 5. Wareham will play its first playoff game at home against Abington on Thursday, Feb. 26 at 6:30 p.m.
The Bulldogs also snapped Wareham’s run of eight consecutive South Coast Conference championship titles with a win over Bourne last week.
Friday’s game was close throughout, neither team pulled ahead by more than 8 points at any time.
Two players dominated offensively, scoring more than half of Wareham’s points.
Leading the way for the Vikings was senior co-captain Andy White with 23 points. The second highest scorer Sophomore Jovahn Thomas score 20 points.
