Vikings hockey team falls to Dighton-Rehoboth

The Wareham Vikings boys hockey team fell to Dighton-Rehoboth, 10-4, in the team's first league game Saturday, Jan. 5, at the Gallo Ice Arena in Bourne.

It was a hard-fought game by a young team. According to coach Bryan Erickson, the ten man team consists of seven freshmen.

“We’ve got our hands full every game,” said Erickson. “We’re in a big rebuilding mode.”

The ejection of team captain, senior T.J. Klueber, in the first period for game for misconduct — using inappropriate language — certainly didn’t help. The crowd erupted in protest when Klueber was ejected, and Erickson said he didn't agree with the call.

“He [the referee] thought he heard something that wasn’t said. … I don’t think it was intentional by the refs. Everyone has a bad night.”

But with Klueber out, he said, “It changes the game completely.”

By the end of the first period, Wareham was down 3-0.

The Vikings got on the board in the second period, with Steven Toal scoring twice.

However, Dighton-Rehoboth came back hard, and ended the period leading Wareham 8-2.

Wareham scored twice more in the third period, with a goal from Pat Hurley, and one from Assistant Captain Craig Lauzon for a final score of 10-4.

Next up, the boys take on Southeastern Regional Vocational-Technical High School at 6 p.m. tonight at the Gallo Ice Arena in Bourne.
