Vikings pound ORR, keep winning streak alive

The Bulldogs couldn't bite the Vikings on Tuesday.

The Wareham High School varsity boys basketball team is now 17-0 after a 92-57 win over Old Rochester Regional High School.

“The kids play hard, they practice hard, and they shot well,” said Vikings coach Kevin Brogioli.

Junior Darien Fernandes had a particularly stellar game, scoring 36 points for the Vikings.

“Darien Fernandes played another monster game for us," Brogioli said.

But the Vikings did have a few mishaps, the coach noted.

“We did give up some easy layups and a lot of three-pointers just on miscommunication,” said Brogioli. “That shouldn’t happen. We put a stop to that. But I can’t fault the boys considering the overall outcome of the game.”

Old Rochester coach Steve Carvalho said he was proud of his team.

“Honestly, I was extremely impressed just by the effort made tonight,” said Carvalho, who is now in his eighth season with the Bulldogs. “I know they really wanted the win.”

Carvalho took advantage of the team’s most valuable player: 6'6" senior Max Risch.

Risch is an ideal player for any basketball team because he’s quick and he can shoot, but most importantly—he’s tall.

Carvalho had Risch playing inside where he could rebound and block shots.

The game got physical near the end of the third quarter when a foul ball resulted in some pushing, shoving, and name-calling. It's not the first time this season where emotions have run high -- especially now that the Vikings are the team to beat.

“We talked about the idea of ‘toughness’ before the game. ... The different energies can quickly turn negative and manifest in different ways – the crowd banging the boards or hitting the floor and even playing good defense," said Brogioli. "We take the boys out, let them cool down, and remind them what’s important and why we’re here.”

The Vikings next play on Friday, February 10, against Bourne High School at home.
