Vikings varsity baseball clinches playoff spot
Wareham's boys varsity baseball team earned a spot in the state tournament with a win over Bourne High School on May 16.
"I'm really proud of them, it's been a three-year process for these kids," said assistant coach Karl Farnworth, explaining that many of the seniors on the team have been playing together since they were sophomores.
A high school baseball team earns a spot in the playoffs by winning 50% of its games, Farnworth said.
The Vikings missed a tournament spot by two games in 2010, said Farnworth, and missed a spot by one game last year.
For the time being, Farnworth said that he was concerned about winning more games which would help them gain home field advantage in the playoffs.
"I'd like to get a home game for the first game of the tournament," Farnworth said, acknowledging that some tough games lay ahead.
Wareham is now tied for second place with Apponequet Regional High School for the best record in the South Coast Conference. Dighton-Rehoboth Regional High School currently leads the conference with the best record.
The playoff starts in early June, said Farnworth.
"They worked really hard, they're really good kids, and it's been a goal of theirs since they were sophomores to get in the tournament, and I'm glad to see that," said Farnworth.
