Wareham baseball beats Middleboro on opening day, loses to Seekonk

Apr 9, 2012

Wareham varsity baseball won its first opening day in 4 years last Thursday, April 5 by beating the Middleboro Sachem 9-2 in a game that featured a first inning grand slam by senior Brandon Heal to immediately put the Viking's up 4-0.

The Vikings' game against Seekonk on April 10 was not so victorious, however, and the Vikings lost 17-6.

The opening day victory was the first time in 4 years that the Vikings beat Middleboro.

Starting pitcher and senior Ian Searles kept the Middleboro Sachem at bay for the first 5 innings with 7 strikeouts. Searles allowed only 2 hits, 2 walks, and 2 "unearned runs," or runs made off of fielding error, while he was on the mound.

Vikings pitcher and senior Sean Conway closed up the game in the 6th and 7th innings. While at bat, Conway scored two runs for the Vikings, and senior Billy Peterson added 2 more to the Vikings total. Senior Brandon Mello topped it off with 1 run.

The Vikings had a similar amount of hits in the Seekonk game but were outscored by Seekonk Warriors 17-6.

The Warriors scored 6 runs in the first inning with 3 errors made by the Vikings.

Searles started the game but was pulled after 2 innings.

The Vikings managed to pull back 6-5 in the top of the 3rd inning with a 1 point deficit. The Vikings were down 2 points with a score of 8-6 a bit later in the game, but the Vikings could not hold on even though they hit the ball and managed to get "10 guys on base" according to Assistant Head Coach Karl Farnworth.

"Hopefully when you play like that, you win some games," said Farnworth.

Heal was 3 hits for 4 times at bat and scored 2 runs in the game. Conway, Peterson, and outfielder Steve Harrison were all 2 hits for 4 times at bat.

The Viking's have a full schedule for the rest of the week with a game against Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational Technical High School on Thursday, April 12 and against Dighton-Rehoboth on Friday, April 13. Both matches are away games and will be at 3:30 p.m.

The Vikings are now 1-1 for the season. Because Middleboro is not in the South Coast Conference league, however, the Vikings are 0-1 in their league standings.
