Wareham Community Gardens accepting sign-ups

Feb 14, 2011

The Wareham Community Gardens will be starting its third season this spring (when it finally arrives).

Located on Tihonet Road, the garden contains forty rectangles. (The Community Gardens founder and Chief Planter Dick Paulsen says he is "rather old and hesitant to use over-use the more common appellation 'plots,' hence 'rectangles.'")  All rectangles are supplied with water. Both the land and water are supplied by A.D. Makepeace.

The vegetables grown include the usual suspects, tomatoes, corn, and squash as well as some unusual items such as bok choy and Japanese egg plant. Extra vegetables are donated to local charities and churches.

And for the past two years, there has been a much different crop. The gardens have also been the nesting place for two varieties of turtles. Gardeners gathered, much like proud parents, to release 20 offspring last fall.

Cost is a nominal $30 per season with a one-time charge of $5 for registration. Residents of other communities are welcome to join.

Another aim of the gardens is to try to get more children involved. Most of the gardeners started as children, at their parents’ or grandparents’ knee. For more information about Wareham Community Gardens and to get involved, visit www.warehamcommunitygardens.com.
