Wareham Cooperative School moves back home

Wareham Cooperative School students will see familiar home this fall, when the school moves back to the Wareham Public School system’s campus.

Superintendent Kimberly Shaver-Hood said the school, which had been split into East and West units two years ago, will be relocating its classes above the old cooperative building, where the old Boys & Girls Club of Wareham used to be housed.

Shaver-Hood said the move was a cost-saving measure. It also will make it easier for students to take classes at the middle school or high school, and eliminate the issue of transportation.

“We have been looking at meeting students’ needs, and providing efficient opportunities for students,” Shaver-Hood said. “If they were at the East [or West] school, we could not effectively transfer students.”

Shaver-Hood also said there will be opportunities for students to take certification courses, and GED courses. However, though the academic opportunities may be expanding, the core of the school itself will remain largely the same.

“You won’t really see much of a change for students who come here during the day,” Shaver-Hood said. “It certainly is our expectation that students who wish to come to school … work, do their job, and be accountable.”

“We have some really nice students, and providing them with opportunities is something we would like to do, but it is something they have to take advantage of,” Shaver-Hood continued.
