Wareham Cooperative School raises prices for out-of-district night school students

This year’s out-of-district students in the Wareham Cooperative School's night school program will see a price hike on their classes.

Wareham Superintendent Kimberly Shaver-Hood said out-of-district students will have to pay $300 per class, a $140 increase since last year.

“This is to cover the cost of out-of-district students coming into the district,” Shaver-Hood said. “There are also some funding issues.”

The night school program at the Cooperative School is an alternative choice for high school-aged students who may not be able to follow the traditional path to getting a diploma, due to having to work during normal school hours, or dealing with family or personal issues.

Shaver-Hood said there are 23 out-of-district students and 40 in-district students enrolled in this year’s program. Though there are a variety of both core and elective courses offered for students, but Shaver-Hood said the number of courses each student has to take varies.

“Some students may need one class to graduate, some need three, some need more than three,” Shaver-Hood said. “It’s tailored to the individual student.”

Shaver-Hood said she anticipates more students, once the school year starts.

“Students find that, for whatever reason, day school is not working for them, and may come to us to enroll,” Shaver-Hood said.

Shaver-Hood said there are other night school programs around Massachusetts, but that Wareham’s is one of the only ones in the area.

The school will be holding registration next week, with a specific date to be announced. Classes will begin on Aug. 31.
