Wareham Crossing takes you out to the ballgame
Wareham Crossing's Cranberry Lane turned into Boston's Yawkey Way on Tuesday afternoon as the Wareham Gatemen conducted their final autograph session of the season and area merchants, and lots of food, offered fun activities for families.
"This was a great event," said Fairhaven resident Jen Henriques, who traveled to the event with her son Griffin and daughter Kacey. Griffin had a hat, baseball, t-shirt, and team picture all adorned with autographs, some of them from the players who had coached him on his pitching at the Gatemen baseball clinic.
In addition to getting to meet the players, a big "hit" of the day was the complimentary photographs. A large green screen had been set-up to superimpose pictures of excited children leaping against Fenway's Green Monster, and children left with a photograph showing them making leaping catches in front of Boston's historic outfield wall.
And of course, what's a day at the ball game without food? Friendly's Express gave away free ice-cream cones, and Qdoba gave free samples and fed the Gatemen players. Fenway Franks were also available, although there were only 65 left at 12:30 p.m. - with an hour and a half left to go in the day.
Verizon Wireless donated markers for the autographs, and the AT&T store had to constantly resupply their basket of lollipops.
"A lot of shopping centers around, but Wareham Crossing believes in making this a special destination for more than just shopping," said Ellyne Fleschner, regional retail manager for WS Development Associates, the mall's owner. "It's a nice way to spend a summer day!"
