Wareham dog park group receives $225,000 for construction, clearing to begin soon

The Dog Park Affiliation of Wareham was awarded nearly a quarter million dollars on Jan. 26 for the construction of a new dog park off Maple Springs Road.

The grant, $225,000 from the Stanton Foundation, is the last push the organization needed to fund the park’s creation, DPAW President Corey Blanchard said Monday.

Blanchard said she hopes construction begins in the spring, though there’s still much to do before development starts. The land will first be cleared either later this week or next, she said. Soon after the group will hold a groundbreaking ceremony before a bid binder is released and bidding begins.

Plans for the park include a large dog area, a small dog area, benches, a parking lot and dog water fountains, according to conceptual drawings agreed upon by DPAW, Blanchard said.

“That is the plan that we will follow,” she said.

Though DPAW was awarded enough money to bid out construction, Blanchard said they will continue to fundraise for annual maintenance and certain park amenities, like a dog trash disposal unit and decorations.

The Stanton Foundation is a private organization that distributes grants for canine welfare, the protection of the First Amendment and international security. The group has granted money for dog parks to be constructed elsewhere in Massachusetts, including Framingham and Brewster.

The dog park will be built at 74 Maple Springs Road off Rt. 25 near Glen Charlie Road. Per previous Week reporting, the DPAW has a 99-year lease with Wareham for seven acres, though the dog park is planned to take up just one of those acres. The remaining six will be saved for future development, like recreational areas and walking trails.
