Wareham Firemen's Association offers residents a chance to Ride the Rails

Providing local high schoolers with scholarship money is as easy as taking a train ride.

The Wareham Firemen’s Association will offer the community a chance to take a train ride on July 24, at its Ride the Rails fundraising event. As the association’s first fundraiser of the year, association member Melissa Bourne said they were hoping for a good turnout, as they did a few years ago, when they last offered ride.

“It’s an event around this area that people love,” Bourne said. “With the atmosphere, riding along the canal … [people] like the scenic part of it, instead of just sitting at a fundraiser.”

Association President Ken Jordan said the Wareham Firemen's Association is a nonprofit association made up of about 25 members from Wareham and the surrounding area that provides assistance to firemen and their families in times of need. It also provides scholarships to area high school seniors, as well as donates to local charities.

The association is partnering with the historic Cape Cod Central Railroad to rent a train for the evening. The railroad, which offers scenic dinner rides and other forms of moving entertainment along the railway, dates back to the mid-1800s, when a rail line was first extended to Sandwich to move freight.

Bourne said the proceeds from the event would go toward the association’s charitable deeds, such as giving scholarships to graduating area seniors. She said the association gives out $2,000 in scholarships every year, in addition to its donations to various community organizations.

The train will board at the Buzzard’s Bay train station at 5 p.m. to take off at 5:30 p.m., and return to the station at 8:30 p.m. The ride includes light refreshments, such as sandwiches, and alcoholic beverages will be available for purchase.

Bourne said there is limited seating available, and almost a third of the seats have already been booked on the train. The cost for the regular level cat is $24 for adults, $12 for children between the ages of 5 and 12, and free for children under 5. The cost for the dome level cat, which is above the regular level and seats adults only, is $28.
