Wareham Free Library celebrates 25 years with cake, stories and songs

Jun 18, 2016

A quarter century has passed since the Wareham Free Library moved to 59 Marion Road, a milestone patrons and supporters celebrated on Saturday afternoon.

“I can’t believe it’s been 25 years,” said State Rep. Susan Williams Gifford (R-Wareham). “We’re still going strong. Positive and good things are on the way. The library has enjoyed a lot of community support through the years.”

Gifford presented library trustees with a citation from the state house of representatives for the occasion.

While the library is working towards regaining its state certification, those in attendance did not let that fact damper the mood.

Last year, the state decertified the library for not meeting minimum standards. That means the library is not receiving state aid and patrons can't use the interlibrary loan system. The penalty ends in 2017, provided the library has made progress towards meeting certain goals.

“We’ve had some struggles the past few years,” said Library Trustee Roger Bacchieri. “But the future is looking bright.”

The event featured story time, activities for kids, free birthday cake and a performance by the New England Harp Orchestra. Photographs and items showcasing the library’s history over the past 25 years were on display, too.

At noon, those in attendance sang happy birthday and then volunteers dished out cake.

Jayne Chouinard of Wareham arrived with her children. She said the library has become a focal point for her family.

“We love the library we come here for the programs all the time and, of course, check out lots of books,” she said.
