The Wareham Garden Club gets their flowers
Through many years of digging into the dirt and making Wareham a colorful place, the Wareham Garden Club has blossomed.
The Wareham Garden Club, founded in 1938 as the Wareham Garden Lovers Club, has supported beautification, education and community service in the town for more than 80 years. The Wareham Select Board recognized the Wareham Garden Club Tuesday, April 7 for its service and contributions to the town’s appearance and community life.
The club has grown to over 100 members who work to enhance the town’s natural environment and civic pride.
President of the club, Carmel Uí Mhaolagάin gave kudos to her team of volunteers and highlighted their work.
"I have such a great such a great group of people working with me," she said.
Members maintain several public sites, including the Gateway lighthouses, Minot Memorial at Indian Neck and Minot Avenue, Pizzoli Square, Main Street bump-outs, the Wareham Garden Club Memorial Garden at Indian Neck and Oak Street and the memorial garden at the post office.
Through its “Weed Wednesday” initiative, volunteers maintain public areas such as Town Hall, the police station, the train depot, library, the Depot and Onset Avenue intersection and Main Street sidewalks.
The club also provides scholarships, supports garden therapy programs at the Council on Aging, and contributes to civic events by placing wreaths and seasonal poinsettias at historic sites, Tobey Hospital and the public library.
Annual events, including a spring plant sale and a Christmas fair, bring residents together and encourage community participation.
Chris Wiggin of the club said it's been a "pleasure" to serve the community and that the club is always searching for more volunteers.
"I've only been part of the Wearham Garden Club for a couple of years and I was very touched by the first Veterans Day parade that I went from that was put on by Wareham town. They acknowledged us there. The community spirit I think in Wareham is wonderful, it just really touches my heart. So I'm very glad to serve," she said.
