Wareham to help Staten Island residents in Hurricane Sandy relief effort

Nov 16, 2012

A Wareham coalition that has formed to offer help to victims of Hurricane Sandy is aiming to help residents in the Oakwood Heights and Gerritsen Beach areas of Staten Island, N.Y.

The waterfront communities are in need of fire extinguishers and combination carbon monoxide/smoke detectors, as residents remain without electricity and are relying on generator-power.

Specifically needed are ABC dry chemical extinguishers, either 2½ pounds or 5 pounds.

Donations of new fire extinguishers and carbon dioxide/smoke detectors will be accepted at the Wareham Fire Station on Main Street and at the Onset Fire Station in Onset Village until noon on Saturday, November 24.

Only new fire extinguishers and detectors will be accepted, as the items have a shelf life.

"The Wareham Hurricane Sandy Coalition is a newly-formed group which will be working together with this devastated community to show care and concern for our fellow Americans … until they have been restored to a normal, functioning waterfront community," organizers wrote in a statement.

The Wareham Hurricane Sandy Coalition will next meet on Monday, Nov. 19, at 5 p.m. at the Pier View Restaurant in Onset.
