Wareham High School Winter Guard wins consecutive state championship

Apr 2, 2012

The Wareham High School Winter Color Guard brought home its second consecutive state championship title on March 31 -- a big feat considering last year's win moved the team into a new, more difficult division.

The team members kept their cool against their competitors throughout the season, and in a competition where the difference between first- and third-place can come down to tenths of a point, exemplified the theme of their show: they would "never let go."

The Vikings' show honored the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic, using the movie storyline and soundtrack of which almost anyone can recite a line or lyric.

The win was especially sweet, as the team had come in second place to rival Mansfield High School by .30 of a point the previous week, after garnering first-place at the four other competitions in which it had a competitor in its division.

"We had no idea we were going to win," Winter Color Guard Director Annmarie Churchill admitted.

But at the New England Winter Guard Championships, held at Reading Memorial High School, the team blasted ahead of Mansfield, scoring 94.70 over Mansfield's 92.60, and also beating the Dedham and Malden high schools.

The score was nearly 10 points above the previous week's score.

It was "a flawless, breathtaking performance," Churchill said. "They had the audience, they had the judges, they had everyone in tears."

The guard is judged on dancing, how it uses equipment, overall choreography, and the "general effect" of the show.

Last year, the team moved from the Scholastic Class A to the more challenging Scholastic Class AA. With this year's win, the team is moving into yet another difficult division -- Local Scholastic A. The guard will now compete against the Dennis-Yarmouth, Case, and Reading high schools.

If that all sounds like alphabet soup, it just means the guard is one move away from the top division -- National Scholastic A, which would have the team competing against winter guards from other states.

Wareham has never been in such a high-performing class, but the team is up for the challenge, Churchill says.

The guard is young -- 10 members are in middle school -- and the team is only losing a few seniors.

"We have come so far," she said. "We've got this."
