Wareham High softball team fired up and ready to play

Just because the season ends, doesn't mean the work does. The Wareham High School softball team knows that all too well.

According to coach Cindy Sylvia, the ladies put in plenty of practice in the off-season, and are ready to go when the season gets underway.

"Some are softball players who have been playing their whole lives, and some are just trying to pick up a sport," said Sylvia, adding that a number of the girls spend their summers playing in the Cape Cod Girls Softball League.

There are a number of girls on the team who Sylvia says she expects to make some noise this year.

"In the past we've had a pitcher, now we have three players who pitch," said Sylvia.

One of those pitchers is senior captain Stacia Kryzek.

"She doesn't overpower anybody, but she has good movement," said Sylvia. "The other players look to her for leadership, and she delivers."

Also serving as a captain is senior Jackie-lyn Lima.

Junior Emily Bacchiocchi's primary position on the field is catcher, but she's versatile enough to come in the clutch, should the need arise.

"Wherever there's a crucial hole, I look to Emily to fill that void, because she's such a good athlete," Sylvia said.

That added depth to the bench is vital in the South Coast Conference which, according to Sylvia, fields some of the toughest softball teams around.

"There is no easy opponent any time you take the field," says Sylvia.

Last year was pretty rough ,with the Vikings finishing the season with a record of 4-16. Last season included match-ups with Case, Dighton-Rehobath, Fairhaven, and  Greater New Bedford Voc-Tech, "all of who are very good teams," according to Sylvia.

The Fairhaven Blue Devils were SCC champions in 2011 and 2012, and made it to the South Sectional Finals where they fell to Abington.

When facing such daunting competition, Sylvia says that staying focused on the task at hand is crucial.

"We're going to play in the moment," she said. "I think we'll surprise some people."

Playing "in the moment" will be key this season, according to Sylvia. Whether it's a win that you're proud of, or a loss you're upset about, it has to stay where it belongs: In the past.

"You're as good as your last win," Sylvia explains, "and as bad as your last loss."
