A Wareham man faces child endangerment and other charges after police say he was driving while drunk with a child in the car.

Robert Place, 48, was arrested on Saturday, Aug. 25 charged with child endangerment while operating under the influence, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest among other charges.

Wareham Police said at approximately 6 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 25, officers responded to a report of someone driving erratically on Cranberry Highway. Officers then learned the driver was headed to Edgewater Drive. They found Place parked in a driveway.

Police said an investigation revealed Place was driving while impaired with a small child in the car. According to police, Place was handcuffed, but tried to pull away from officers while yelling.

He was taken to the Wareham Police Department and was held on $5,000 bail. Police did not release the child's age.

Acting Police Chief John Walcek praised the officers involved.

“Sadly, we have a child that was put in harm’s way because of the actions of an adult. One of our most important duties is protecting those that cannot protect themselves,” said Walcek. “The officers responding to this incident took immediate and decisive action to ensure the safety of the child.”
