Wareham man faces heroin charges following low-speed chase
State Police along with officers from Wareham, Plymouth, and Bourne were involved in a more than 20-mile pursuit that began at approximately 7:48 p.m. on Wednesday. The chase ended in Wareham.
William Byrd, 34, of Wareham was arrested and charged with one count of failing to stop for police, and two counts of possession of heroin with intent to distribute. Byrd was arraigned in Falmouth District Court Thursday afternoon, and is being held in lieu of $50,000 cash bail.
Police executed a search warrant at the home of his alleged associate, Scott Gariepy, at his Cohasset Avenue home in Buzzards Bay.
Gariepy was arrested and charged with possession of heroin and several counts of possession of heroin with intent to distribute according to police.
Also arrested at the Cohasset Avenue home, was 25-year-old Shawna Warren, who was charged with possession of a class A substance according to a clerk in Falmouth District Court.
Byrd threw money from his vehicle while being pursued, and police recovered $1,600, then found $9,000 more on Byrd when he was arrested.
The chase lasted approximately 45 minutes and, according to police, Byrd never went over 45 MPH.
Byrd managed to avoid three tire deflation devices until a fourth flattened the driver’s side tires.
The chase ended in the Tobey Hospital emergency room parking lot, where after a brief foot chase Byrd was reportedly "tasered" by police. Byrd was taken into custody by Bourne Police.
The arrests were the result of a seven month investigation into the heroin trade in Bourne and Wareham conducted by the Wareham, Bourne, and State Police departments as well as the Drug Enforcement Administration Task Force.
