Wareham man hired as new library director

Jun 22, 2016

A new director has been hired for the Wareham Free Library – Michael Carlozzi of Wareham.

Town Administrator Derek Sullivan made the announcement at the Selectmen’s Tuesday night meeting, saying a total of nine people had applied for the position.

Carlozzi replaces former Director Denise Medeiros who retired in May 2015.

“I’m happy to have him back and look forward to working with him,” said Sullivan. “I’m sure this announcement is making a lot of people happy.”

Carlozzi moved to Wareham at the age of 3 and attended Wareham Public Schools. He worked as a Wareham Free Library page from 1999 to 2005.

Sullivan said Carlozzi currently works in the Canton Public Library as the technology and information services librarian.

Carlozzi said he was looking forward to leading the library through the process of regaining its state certification, which it lost in 2014.

“I was there during the Wareham Free Library’s glory days,” said Carlozzi. “I remember what it looked like as an active and vibrant part of the community. It would be great to bring it back.”

Carlozzi noted it wouldn’t be easy.

“It’s obviously going to take a lot of work with a lot of collaboration between different departments,” he said. “I look forward to the challenge.”

Carlozzi will make $63,000 annually, and will start work July 1, Sullivan said.

According to Carlozzi’s resume, he earned his master’s degree in library and information studies from the University of Rhode Island.

Previously, he taught English at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and worked at the Roger Williams University Library.
