Wareham man indicted on kidnapping, assault, weapons charges

Aug 16, 2013

A 23-year-old Wareham man, a level 3 sex offender, has been indicted and arraigned on kidnapping, assault, and weapons charges.

Joseph Gomes of 5 Apple Street is charged with kidnapping, assault and battery, possession of a large-capacity firearm, and unlawful possession of a firearm, according to Plymouth County Assistant District Attorney Russ Eonas.

Gomes was arrested on May 30 after he allegedly made "aggressive sexual advances toward" a woman at his home and prevented her from leaving the residence. The woman was able to escape unharmed and immediately drove to the Wareham Police Department.

Gomes, who was indicted on July 26 and arraigned on August 7, is held at the Plymouth County Correctional Facility in lieu of $50,000 cash bail.

In 2012, Gomes was convicted of indecent assault and battery on a person more than 14 years old. A level 3 sex offender is the highest level in Massachusetts. A person is classified as a level 3 offender if the state's Sex Offender Registry Board determines that the risk of reoffending is high.
