Wareham Middle School students come together for International Peace Day

Wareham Middle School’s “One Day, One Goal” event had students outside Monday afternoon playing soccer together, all in the name of world peace.

Held for the second consecutive year, “One Day, One Goal” coincided with International Peace Day, celebrated on Sept. 21. Principal Dr. Peter Steedman noted that the soccer game was originally set for Sept. 22, but poor weather pushed it back to Monday.

With a warm day and clear skies overhead, Steedman said students couldn’t have asked for a better day.

While “One Day, One Goal’s” message of world peace is a lofty one, Steedman the school’s event was about getting students together, interacting and having fun as one student body.

The game, which pitted the different grades against each other, was held during “Viking Time,” a new initiative Steedman launched when he was hired last year.

During Viking Time, small groups of students meet with one teacher for 30 minutes each week to discuss issues and ideas. Each group must come up with a service project to spearhead throughout the year.

“We’re able to come together as a community and have a conversation simultaneously,” said Steedman, who added topics include being good students and citizens. “It’s one teacher and 15 kids all talking about the same topic, it makes a small school even smaller.”
