Wareham Middle School students discuss Verizon App Challenge
The following are descriptions of apps designed by students at Wareham Middle School who are involved in the STEAM Academy at the school.
The STEAM Academy is a first-year program that allows students to work on one particular subject, such as sustainability, for example, in each of several different subject areas throughout the school year.
The apps were designed as part of the Verizon App Challenge, which asks students to design their own apps with the hopes of winning $20,000 for their school.
From student Madison Fernandes:
In the Verizon App Challenge, we had to make an app, and not just any app. This app had to be original and it had to include an element of healthcare, sustainability, or education in a fun or helpful way.
Our App, called “Zap The Answer,” shows education by practicing your multiplication facts. Others chose healthcare like “Obesity Run” which gives you awareness towards obesity.
Next year, if this is to be done again, I would do it. It is fun and a exciting experience. Students can let their imagination run wild it can be a fun app or a serious app for education to healthcare. It could be a real-world example to fantasy with dragons and unicorns.
The prize is a fun experience and if you win the Verizon App Challenge, your app idea becomes real and you will get a galaxy tablet and $20,000 dollars for your school.
From student Jasmine Black:
Recently the Wareham Middle School STEAM Academy’s 7th grade students were entered into a contest. This contest was called the Verizon App Challenge. In the Verizon App Challenge you were required to create an app that met the standards of education, healthcare, or sustainability.
The app I created with my friends (Jodi Susi, Kiaralyz Suarez, Isabelle Ellis, Mollie Johnson, Kayla Cruz, and Abigale Berriault) met the standard of education. This app met the standard of education because it reminds students of what their homework assignment is. This app is called “Homework Alert”.
I would highly recommend this app to teachers and students in the future because it was very fun and educational.
