Wareham might soon get a sister

Wareham might soon become a sister town with Wareham in England.

Wareham is a market town in Dorset, England, and is located close to the south coast of the island, and is bordered by two rivers: the River Frome and the River Piddle or Trent.

The idea to become a sister town was born back in 1976 when the mayor of Wareham, England visited Wareham, Massachusetts, but the idea was never executed.

Recently, Town Moderator Claire Smith has been in contact with people from the British town.

“There has been a connection. The mayor of Wareham thinks it is a wonderful idea and she was very excited about it,” said Smith. “She brought it before the town council last Tuesday evening and they voted and approved to go forward with it.”

Jon Wright, a resident of Wareham, England, gave a presentation about the town’s history to the Wareham Historical Society on June 24.

Smith believes the status of sister town can be achieved either this year or next year.
