Wareham now “in the red”

Oct 30, 2020

Wareham is now in the red, according to the state’s weekly public health report, with a daily incidence rate of more than 8 cases per 100,000 people.

The Board of Health issued a statement urging people to stay safe and take extra precautions this weekend while celebrating Halloween.

Updates to the town’s opening status and allowable activities will be coming soon, the board announced.

According to the state, there have been 35 new cases in the past two weeks, bringing the pandemic’s total case count to 299 people in town.

Both the case counts and percentage of tests coming back positive have increased over the last two weeks.

Superintendent Dr. Kimberly Shaver-Hood released a statement asking for the community’s help in keeping schools open.

“Thankfully to date, we have not had any COVID transmissions occur in our schools,” Shaver-Hood wrote. “Unfortunately, a small number of staff and students are currently quarantining due to contracting the virus elsewhere.”

The school district has reported that two students and two staff members have contracted the virus.

Our district is working diligently to keep students safe and protected during the school day. Still, we need your help outside of school and respectfully request our families remain vigilant with health protocols,” Shaver-Hood wrote. “I understand this may mean sacrificing a social activity, staying home, or canceling plans, and it seems like we have made many sacrifices in recent months. But we cannot protect those in our schools without your help.”
