Wareham’s new Planet Fitness gym held its grand opening Thursday and was swarming with eager gym enthusiasts and those just hoping for some free food and a raffle prize.

Planet Fitness, located at 2991 Cranberry Highway, officially opened its doors March 17.

The grand opening Thursday included a ribbon cutting, tours of the gym, catering by Lindsey’s Family Restaurant and raffle prizes including a treadmill, Boston Red Sox tickets and an autographed hockey stick from the Boston Bruins.

Attendance was high at the grand opening, with lines of people for food and the raffle tickets. Kristina Flynn traveled to the event from Cape Cod in hopes of winning the baseball tickets in the raffle.

One of the establishment’s owners, Jonathan Epstein, said he thought Planet Fitness would “resonate” in the Wareham community because of the gym’s “judgement free” methodology. Planet Fitness encourages people of all body types and fitness levels to join.

“Reception has been off the charts,” Epstein said, adding that people who are morbidly obese or who are professional athletes can all be part of the gym. Members range in age up to 88 years old.

Christine West, age 67, joined Wareham’s Planet Fitness in February, before the doors were even officially open. West said she has been hoping for a Planet Fitness in the area for a long time.

“I love it,” West said. “I haven’t done exercise in 30 or 40 years, but there’s no pressure here.”
