Wareham Police host prescription drug disposal day

Oct 21, 2013

The Wareham Police Department will host a prescription drug "take back" and disposal day on Saturday, October 26, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Wareham Fire Department's Main Street station.

Residents from Wareham and the surrounding area can drop off expired and unused medication, which will be disposed of at no cost to the community. The program is part of a nationwide initiative of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.

"Prescription drugs are currently abused by people in greater numbers than cocaine, heroin, hallucinogens, and inhalants combined," said Acting Chief Kevin Walsh in encouraging the community to drop off medications. "In most cases, people are able to obtain these drugs from their homes or from a friend's home."

The prescription drug disposal is anonymous and free of charge. However, the following items cannot be accepted: syringes, needles, medical devices, thermometers, and IV bags.

For more information, contact Wareham Police Detective Sgt. Douglas Jacinto at 508-295-1212, ext. 2238.
