Wareham Public Schools considers opening to adults, collects opinions on adult education

Wareham Public Schools is looking to offer adult education programs and wants community input on what those programs should be.

At Tuesday’s Selectmen meeting, Superintendent Kimberly Shaver-Hood and School Committee Chairwoman Judy Caporiccio gave a presentation on the potential adult education programs.

Some classes would offer college credit, others would be for adult education, but without college credit, such as language, culinary, gardening and fitness classes.

“Wareham is the perfect spot” for the classes, Caporricio said. “We would like to open up our schools to more people.” Caporricio pointed out that there is nothing similar to this in Wareham or surrounding towns.

“The beauty of what you’re suggesting is that it’s right here,” said Selectmen Judith Whiteside. “It’s easy to get [to the classes]...it’s a really good opportunity."

Shaver-Hood said the classes could begin as early as January, depending on public interest. So far, she has received positive reactions via the surveys.

Surveys looking for public opinion on the classes will be open until Sept. 30. The surveys offer an opportunity to volunteer to teach a course and to specify which hours work best for classes. The surveys “take less than a minute” to complete, Shaver-Hood said.
