Wareham Public Schools no longer at Level 3

Nov 16, 2017

Wareham is no longer considered a Level 3 school district, School Committee members rejoiced on Wednesday with a round of applause.

Superintendent Kimberly Shaver-Hood explained the school district appealed the Level 3 rating with the state, believing it was incorrect. After the state reviewed the district’s data, they agreed and Wareham High School is now a Level 2 school, which will be updated on the state’s website soon.

The elementary and middle school are ranked at “no level,” since lower grades are only at a Level 3, 4 or 5 and Wareham schools have surpassed this ranking.

In 2015, test scores on the MCAS dropped Wareham High School from a Level 1 to Level 3, in the lowest performing 20 percent of public schools in Massachusetts.

“We’re very proud of all the efforts of our teachers, of our paras, of our administrators and we certainly thank our students for their work,” Shaver-Hood said.

A Level 2 status for Wareham High School means it is much closer to scoring a 75 in performance and progress among all students. At that benchmark, the school will regain its Level 1 status.
