Wareham ranks 6th worst in the state for distracted driving fatalities
Wareham has been ranked the sixth worst town in the state for distracted driving fatalities, according to a ConsumerAffairs report.
Representative Kay Evans said the consumer news and advocacy organization used numbers from the U.S. Department of Transportation and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Evans said in order to create accurate comparisons among cities, the organization used a scale of 100,000 people per town, regardless of how many people actually lived in the towns measured.
“The data was gathered by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration via local police departments,” Evans said. “To even the playing field for all sizes of communities, the data is averaged on a 100,000 person population. That way, we can rank larger cities next to smaller cities and know that the rank is correct.”
The organization used numbers from 2014, as those were the most recent available. Wareham’s population in 2014 was 22,585, with a distracted driving fatality rate of 8 people. Using the scaled model, however, there were 35.42 fatalities per 100,000 people, placing Wareham in sixth place.
In first place was Brimfield, with a distracted driving fatality rate of 107.21.
