Wareham receives $9,000 'BeSafe' grant
The Town of Wareham has been awarded a $9,000 "loss control" grant from the Massachusetts Interlocal Insurance Agency (MIIA), which is the town’s provider of property and casualty insurance.
The grant will allow the town to install “BeSafe” systems at both libraries, the wastewater treatment plant, the Municipal Maintenance building, and the Multi-Service Center, according to Wareham Police.
The BeSafe system identifies and logs information, such as detailed floor plans, numbered doorways, and unique building features. This information can then be accessed by firefighters, police officers, and other first-responders.
According to police, having this information will reduce the risk of injury for emergency responders, and the people they’re trying to help. It is also intended to reduce the risk of property damage.
“These proactive efforts help protect the town, its employees, and citizens by avoiding accidents and potentially costly claims," police said.
Lt. Kevin Walsh was “instrumental” in securing the grant, according to police. Grants are available to all municipalities that are members of the MIIA.
The program will also be implemented in conjunction with the Town of Wareham Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC), an all-hazards planning group of various public safety officials, which is certified through the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA).
