Wareham residents charged with arson after bed sheet causes fire
Wareham Police have charged two residents with arson after the pair allegedly tossed a flaming bed sheet out a window during an argument, causing a fire outside a Main Street building.
Wareham Police Sgt. Michael Smith was traveling on Main Street at approximately 12:30 a.m. on Wednesday, when he was alerted to small fires burning on the ground and on an outside ledge at 191 Main Street, a three-floor building that houses apartments, offices, and businesses, according to police.
During an investigation by Wareham Police and Wareham Fire officials, police learned that a verbal argument had taken place between residents Kally Foneallaz, 45, and Ross Bickford, 47, and that the bed sheet had come from their apartment, police said.
Police knocked on the door of Kally Foneallaz, 45, who rents an apartment at 191 Main Street. According to police reports, the door had been blocked, but after the police knocked several times Fongaeallaz moved the couch that had been blocking the door.
Court documents state that Fongeallaz initially told the police she didn't know anything about the fire, but changed her story on the way to the police station. Fongeallaz said that a fire started in her apartment and Bickford attempted to put the blaze out in the shower.
When that didn't work, he threw the burning sheet out the window according to reports.
Foneallaz and Bickford were arrested at the scene and charged with "arson of a dwelling house," according to police.
The fire caused "moderate damage," police said, and "was quickly extinguished by the Wareham Fire Department."
