Wareham seniors strut at bi-annual fashion show

Seniors hit the runway inside the Multi-Service Center for the Council on Aging’s bi-annual fashion show on Monday afternoon.

Organized by Cheryl Johannessen of Old Colony Elder Services and Traci Medeiros, owner of Gallery Consignment Shoppe on Main Street, the event featured outfits from Medeiros’ store worn by local seniors.

“Here comes the golden goddess,” said Medeiros, introducing one of the models in a fetching evening dress. “The dress costs $26, but she looks like a million bucks.”

Models took a spin around the Council on Aging’s main room with an appreciative crowd looking on that offered plenty of applause.

For the fashion show, which is held in the spring and fall, participants are invited to look around Gallery Consignment and choose a couple of outfits they’d like to show off.

Held for the past nine years, Medeiros said the event came about when Johannessen approached her with the idea. At the time, Medeiros was doing similar shows for other councils on aging in surrounding towns.

“It’s a great way to engage the community and the models enjoy coming in and picking out what they’d like to wear,” said Medeiros. “You see how comfortable they are walking around in the outfits.”

Generally, the same group participants in the show each year, but every now and again someone new decides to strut their stuff.

“You get some new people once they see a show and realize it’s not scary,” said Medeiros.

After the brief show, it was back to business as usual at the Council on Aging as volunteers prepared for an afternoon bingo session. The outfits were taken to Gallery Consignment and put back on the racks.

Fashion, it appears, is indeed fleeting.
