Wareham superintendent finalist for Stoneham position

Committee Chair says replacement search premature

For the second time this year, Wareham Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Kimberly Shaver-Hood is in the running for an open superintendent position.

According to a press release from the Stoneham School Committee, Shaver-Hood is one of four finalists board members will interview before making a decision on March 2.

Shaver-Hood’s interview is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 28 at 7 p.m. in Stoneham’s Central Middle School.

School Committee Chair Mel Lazarus said while he’s unhappy about Shaver-Hood’s search, it’s not surprising.

“The shelf life of a superintendent is five years max,” said Lazarus. “Usually, you get three years out of a superintendent and they move to another district because they think the grass is greener somewhere else. It’s not an unusual circumstance.”

Shaver-Hood’s accomplishments speak for themselves, said Lazarus, adding that she was instrumental in bringing International Baccalaureate, an advanced learning program, to the high school.

“I think we’ve made some real strides over the last couple years,” said Lazarus. “I would like her to stay as long as she wants to.”

In January, Shaver-Hood was named a semi-finalist in Franklin’s superintendent search. She was not named a finalist.

Lazarus told Wareham Week at that time that the superintendent said she would stay in Wareham if she was not chosen for that position. It is unclear whether that remains true. Shaver-Hood did not return a request for comment.

Shaver-Hood’s contract expires in two years. There is no penalty if she resigns, but she is required to give ample notice.

Committee member Mary Morgan, who has been critical of the superintendent in the past, said Shaver-Hood’s search is disappointing to staff, students and residents, especially in light of a recent evaluation that earned her a raise.

“Wareham deserves a Superintendent who is committed, understands the needs and is willing to dig beyond the surface to resolve the struggles that the school system is facing,” she said. “Members of the community also deserve an explanation of why she is job searching before her contract is up.”

Even though Shaver-Hood is actively looking for a new position, there are no plans to search for her replacement at this time.

“We can’t start a search until we have a vacancy,” said Lazarus. “At that point, we’ll start looking.”

Shaver-Hood has been Wareham’s superintendent for the past three years. She replaced retiring Superintendent Barry Rabinovitch. At the time she applied for the position, Shaver-Hood was superintendent of the Blackstone-Millville Regional District.

In addition to her Doctorate, Shaver-Hood’s education includes a Bachelor’s degree from Franklin College in Indiana; a Master’s degree in educational administration from Widener University of Chester, Pennsylvania; a Master’s degree in secondary education from Indiana University; and a Master’s certification in school counseling from Butler University in Indianapolis.
