Wareham Vikings kick off football season

Summer isn't over yet, but football fans may be wishing they could usher it out a little faster.

The Wareham Vikings football team will have its first game on September 6, when the boys face off against Bishop Stang.

The Vikings have been hard at work at conditioning camp since early July, and on Monday, they had their first practice.

They ran drills -- then ran them again if they weren't done correctly -- and learned how to do a couple of formations and ran some plays.

Coach Dan Nault shouted encouraging words: "Release it inside like you're going to kill the safety! Then, kill the safety!"

After losing 18 seniors, Nault says he still has high expectations for the team.

"I have one player with legitimate varsity experience," said Nault, referring to 17-year-old senior Owen Braley.

The Vikings football program has produced NFL players, including Stephen Cooper, Division I scholarship players, and three all-state football players.

In years past, Nault says he's had rosters of up to 120 guys, but this year, he has about 60. He attributes this in part to declining enrollment in the school, saying there are fewer boys enrolled these says.

And, well, no ladies have stepped up to the gridiron.

"It doesn't mean we're not going to have a good year, there's just a lot of question marks," said Nault.

Braley says that he's not at all intimidated by having lost so many seniors.

"I'm excited because we get to run a whole new offense this year," he said.

Braley has been playing linebacker on the varsity squad since his sophomore year and says expects as much from the team this year as he would any other.

"A lot of people are confusing our inexperience with a lack of talent," Braley said, adding that the talent is there.

Nault said he's also counting on 17-year-old senior Ritchie Austin to lead the team.

"I rotated in a few positions last year," said Austin.

Nault said that a hamstring injury kept Austin on the sidelines for most of last season, but this year, Austin is ready to play.

"We have a lot of talent. We just have to see how we work together," said Austin. "Having chemistry helps."
