Wareham Vikings ousted from playoffs
The Wareham Vikings playoff hopes ended on Friday night in a 42-12 loss against East Bridgewater High School.
The Division 3A South semifinal game was played at East Bridgewater High School where No. 1 seeded East Bridgewater dominated No. 4 seeded Wareham.
At the end of the half, East Bridgewater had scored 35 points to Wareham’s 6 points. The first half’s sole touchdown for Wareham came courtesy of Isaac Nascimento who followed an 84-yard run with a 2-yard touchdown run early in the first quarter.
Wareham managed to score one more touchdown in the fourth quarter on a run by Jordan Philips.
While the loss knocked Wareham out of the playoffs, the season was a triumph for the Vikings who under new coach Bob Lomp were competitive for the first time in many years.
Lomp and his player’s achievements were recognized in late October when he was named the New England Patriots High School Coach of the Week. Lomp took over a team that was coming off a 2015 record of 4-7. Following Friday’s loss the Vikings are now 6-3.
The Vikings will have two chances to improve that record. The team will face Archbishop Williams High on Friday night at 7 p.m. in Braintree. Like Wareham, Archbishop was defeated in the Division 3A South Sectional semifinal.
On Thanksgiving, the Vikings will end the season against rival Bourne at Spillane Field. Kick off is at 10 a.m.
