Mar 9, 2022

The Wareham Vikings will take on the No. 1 seed Randolph Blue Devils Friday night after beating the Cohasset Skippers 52-50 in its second state basketball tournament win Tuesday night.

The Vikings took on the No. 8 seed Skippers at Cohasset and came out just a hoop ahead when the final buzzer rang.

“Showed a lot of toughness and heart tonight,” the team’s Facebook page posted Tuesday night. “We have come along way in that department. It was a great game tonight. Both teams battled right to the end. Thanks to the amazing fan base that came out tonight, we appreciate the support.

“And then there were 8.”

The team had squeaked out a 73-69 overtime win over Matignon High School Friday night, its first match in the state tournament. The Vikings earned a first-round bye week after the team’s winning season, 12-3 in the conference and 15-7 overall.

Wareham’s next game will be against Randolph at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, March 11 at Holbrook High School. If the Vikings can beat the top-seeded team in Division 4, Wareham will earn a spot in the Final Four.

The team has come away from the state championship tournament with the top title before. In 2010, the Vikings beat New Leadership Charter School of Springfield 80-57 to snag Wareham’s first-ever state championship.
