Wareham voice talent attempts to break into industry with 'golden' voice
He’s trying to find his voice and he’s hoping 2018 will be his big break in the industry.
George Cheney, a 28-year-old Wareham resident, is an aspiring voice talent. His big dream is to be a voice actor who plays a Disney villain, but right now, he’s hoping to do some local voiceovers and get a portfolio.
Cheney started as a chef, then moved to being a server at 99 Restaurant and Brew Fish Bar & Eatery. While working as a server, all his customers made a similar comment about him.
“Everyone told me I had a great voice,” Cheney said. “Two out of three tables would tell me.”
He usually gets asked to do impressions of Darth Vader or Mufasa from The Lion King, but he is also told he sounds like the man who voices the Arby’s commercial.
His customers inspired him to take a workshop in Boston this year, where he learned to use his voice as a tool and to focus on controlling his breath. He was told not to eat chocolate before a gig, which was tough for him.
His biggest critique?
“You can tell I’m from New England," he said. “I have to work at pronouncing my Rs.” He learned what his voice is capable of at the workshop, working on pieces that were somber, energetic and out of his comfort zone.
As someone who describes his voice as “golden, silky and smooth,” Cheney said it was hard to do energetic pieces that weren’t as laid-back and sultry as he is used to. But he enjoyed figuring out how he wants his voice to sound and how to push himself.
Cheney’s role model is Robin Williams in his role as the Genie in Aladdin and he hopes to someday make it big, but for now, he’s looking to showcase his talents and start fulfilling his potential.
Cheney said everyone can agree on enjoying a nice voice or a great meal, which is why he uses his love of cooking and now his voice to unify people.
“I want to reach everyone, especially now when everyone’s so divided over little things,” Cheney said. “Our differences don’t have to divide us.”
His friends and family have been supportive of the transition.
“They want to hear me on the radio and my mom’s ready for me to get rich and famous,” he said.
