Cranberry Coast Concerts

On Friday, August 12, San Francisco Bay Area Playwright, Singer, Pianist and Composer Katie Ketchum will star in her highly-acclaimed original one-woman musical, “Impressions of Mary Cassatt,” about the famous painter. Onset legend Josie Thoms offers an original oil painting in Cassatt’s style, which will be part of the show. The show begins at 7 p.m. at Eastern Bank, located at 226 Main Street.

Onset Cape Verdean Festival

The Onset Cape Verdean Festival, sponsored by the Onset Cape Verdean Festival Association, will be held on Saturday, August 13 from noon to 6 p.m. in downtown Onset with a rain date of Sunday, August 14.

 

The Cape Verdean Festival is one of the community's largest annual events and promises music, shopping, and plenty of food.

There will be 20 food vendors selling traditional Cape Verdean dishes, American food, and desserts along with 80 regular vendors selling Cape Verdean artifacts, clothing, arts and crafts, jewelry, and many other items.

This year’s entertainment will feature Cape Verdean performers from New Bedford, Brockton, Pawtucket, and Boston. The main headliner will be the Monte Cara Band.

Parking is available for $5 at specified areas along Onset Avenue. A free shuttle is provided to the festival site from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

There is no charge to attend the festival. The Onset Cape Verdean Festival is funded strictly through donations from sponsors, community businesses, and individual supporters of the festival. Donations can be made to Onset Cape Verdean Festival Association, P.O. Box 722, Onset, MA 02558.

Decas Playground Committee yard sale

The Decas Playground Committee will hold a yard sale, rain or shine, on Saturday, August 13 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the John W. Decas School parking lot, located at 760 Main Street.

In addition to the sale, the event will feature a moon bounce, face painting, and lots of food. The committee will be selling hot dogs, pizza, and ice cream.

All of the proceeds from the event will go towards the construction of a new playground at Decas Elementary. For more information, contact Jen MacKerron at 508-291-3530.

Sunday, August 14

Bird Island Challenge

Kayakers and rowers will compete in the Gleason Family YMCA's 9th annual Bird Island Challenge, scheduled for Sunday, August 14.

Participants can choose from three courses: three-mile Long Beach, six-mile Great Hill, or the 12-mile Bird Island route.

The event begins and ends at Zecco Marine in downtown Wareham. Breakfast, lunch, and a race packet will be provided.

Proceeds will benefit the YMCA scholarship program, which provides financial assistance to families who need help paying for YMCA memberships and classes.

Benefit concert for Hailey Pease

On Sunday, August 14, the Church of the Good Shepherd will host a benefit concert for eight-year-old Hailey Pease of Wareham, who passed away from leukemia.

Pianists and founders of Cranberry Coast Concerts Kirk Whipple and Marilyn Morales will perform at the concert, which begins at 4 p.m.

The proceeds will benefit Hailey’s family. Tickets are $15 for adults and $8 for children age 12 and under.
