Restaurant owner Cheri Lindsey has been recognized for her efforts in helping a nonprofit give new hope for veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.

Lindsey, owner of Lindsey’s Restaurant on Cranberry Highway, donated food for dinner and a show that raised $4,800.

The money was donated to Project New Hope, a Worcester-based nonprofit dedicated to helping veterans adjust to life after combat.

“She deserves accolades,” said Robert Graser, past state commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. “What she did was awesome.”

Graser said in total the VFW will donate approximately $50,000 to Project New Hope this month.

In March, Graser and the VFW honored Lindsey for her efforts.

This year, VFWs across Massachusetts raised money for Project New Hope as part of its state initiative. The nonprofit was founded in 2011 by Air Force veteran Bill Moore. It provides retreats for veterans and their families that help ease the transition back to civilian life.

Sheryl Marciano, a friend of Lindsey’s, approached her with the fundraising idea last year.

“She’s always wanted to do something for the soldiers,” said Marciano. “When I suggested the idea, she jumped right on it and that's why the fundraiser was such a success.”

Marciano said both she and Lindsey have veterans in their families. Marciano said the nonprofit was a worthy cause.

“A lot of times veterans have a hard time re-acclimating into society, and that’s hard on spouses and children, too,” she said. “Project New Hope just doesn’t help the veterans, it helps their families.”
