Wareham women cheer in alumni performance before Patriots game

Several former New England Patriots cheerleaders from Wareham had the opportunity to cheer for the team again this weekend in an alumni reunion performance.

Tricia Brogioli and Carolee Salerno, both of Wareham, joined Patriots cheerleaders from as far back as the 1960s in a performance before the New England Patriots preseason finale against the New York Giants on Aug. 31. Brogioli was a cheerleader for the Patriots in the early ‘90s along with her twin sister, Tracey, and Salerno was on the squad in the ‘70s.

Brogioli said she practiced through the summer to prepare for the performance. There was one mandatory rehearsal with all 220 cheerleaders and they were sent a video of the routine to learn earlier in the summer.

“When I first saw it, I got a little panicky at first,” Brogioli said. “It’s been a long time since I’ve done a dance routine.” She practiced in her living room all summer and said it embarrassed her three children.

But her kids- Grace, Ben and Ava, and her husband David, a teacher at Wareham Middle School, were at the game cheering Brogioli on. She said she loved being able to share it with them and help them understand her time as a cheerleader.

“That was pretty special for them to see it,” Brogioli said.

Brogioli said she quickly became comfortable with the routine, even though she hasn’t danced for two decades. After a year of planning, the whole performance coming together was “overwhelming” when she stepped into Gillette Stadium.

“It’s something I won’t forget for a long time,” she said.

The performance highlighted each decade, giving each group a separate routine with a medley of decade-appropriate songs.

Brogioli has kept in touch with a few people from her squad and they get together every summer, reuniting from all over the country. But there are far more women she hasn’t seen in decades. At the banquet for the cheerleaders on Sept. 1, she reconnected with them and made some new friends. The banquet featured a performance from the current Patriots cheerleaders and a fashion show with the cheerleader uniforms from the last 55 years.
