Wareham Youth Soccer in full swing

Apr 28, 2013

Spring soccer is in full swing for the Wareham Youth Soccer Club after some un-spring-like weather put a damper on the first few weeks of the season.

"We've had a rough start because we had that cold, wet, windy weather" for the first two weeks, said board member and volunteer Dana Bailey. Bailey says the weather forced the Club to cancel the games one weekend.

The games are held at the soccer fields at the Decas Elementary School.

But Saturday, April 27, was a beautiful day, and from 10 a.m. to noon, there were two soccer games and two practices going on simultaneously.

According to Wareham Youth Soccer Club President Paul Neely, the program wouldn't be possible without a cadre of volunteers, as well as older soccer players who referee games for a small fee.

"It's all about the volunteers, and we could always use more," said Neely. "We're always looking for volunteers."

Neely's 16-year-old son, Eoghan, said he started refereeing games because it's not a bad way to make money on the weekends and, well, he's there anyway.

"I was always at the field, so I figured I might as well," said Eoghan.

Neely says that depending on how many games they referee, kids can makes roughly $30 to $100 for a day of refereeing.

"Soccer kids are good about giving back," Neely observed.
