Wareham's Mainly-Dawgs brings taste of Maine to Massachusetts

May 13, 2017

Craving the succulent “snap!” of a Maine hot dog? You don’t have to drive to Kennebunkport. Satisfaction can be found on Cranberry Highway courtesy of Wareham’s newest food truck.

Owner Marcia Joseph opened Mainly-Dawgs in April. Since then, she said word has spread fast, drawing in customers looking for the steamed buns, sautéed onions and natural casings of Maine hot dogs.

Joseph said she and husband Charles Woodbury modeled the truck after their favorite stand, Wasses Hot Dogs in Maine. The former Rockland, Maine residents moved to Wareham four years ago. She said opening Mainly-Dawgs brought a small piece of their home state to Wareham.

“It really does remind me of Maine,” said Joseph. “This is our home away from home.”

For Joseph, the food truck is also an escape from the corporate world where she spent 20 years as a human resources manager. After being laid off, she decided to follow a different path and Mainly-Dawgs was launched. While her career has changed, she said there are opportunities to put her degree to use from behind the counter.

“I still consider myself in human resources,” she said. “I still deal with people, but now it’s always in a positive way.”

So far, the response from customers has been encouraging. Joseph said she’s already reached a milestone, selling her 1,000th hot dog this month. Also, sales are on the upswing compared to March.

“The Town of Wareham has been very good to us,” Joseph said, noting she wants to remain open year round.

In addition to hot dogs, the stand sells cheeseburgers, fries and Italian sausages. Joseph said there are plans to expand the food truck’s hours and menu with tourist season about to kick into high gear. Joseph said she hopes word of mouth continues to spread about the “little red kitchen” on Cranberry Highway.

“We have a saying: ‘If you like our dogs, tell your friends – if you don’t, tell us!’” said Joseph.

With hot dogs this tasty, customers should have no qualms talking up Mainly-Dawgs. Just be sure to finish chewing before you do.

Mainly-Dawgs is located at 3090 Cranberry Highway in the Cape Cod Collectibles Parking lot (look for the bright red trailer) and is open seven days a week, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mainly-Dawgs accepts cash only.
