West Nile Virus, EEE positive mosquitos found in Wareham
Mosquitos have been found recently in Wareham carrying two different viruses: West Nile Virus and Eastern Equine Encephalitis.
Mosquito samples testing positive for West Nile Virus have been found in town, the Wareham Board of Health warned on Friday, August 2. The Board advised citizens to use insect repellent with EPA-registered active ingredients and to take proper precautions from dusk to dawn.
The virus produces flu-like symptoms in humans and can be dangerous, especially for the young and the elderly.
While mosquito samples containing West Nile Virus have been found in Wareham, the town’s risk level for the virus remains “low,” according to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health.
The Department also has detected Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) in mosquito samples collected in Wareham, along with Abington, Middleboro and Whitman.
EEE is a rare and potentially fatal mosquito-borne illness that can affect people of any age.
The state set the risk of EEE in Wareham to “moderate” at the start of July, after a mosquito carrying the disease was found in Carver.
That threat level remains the same, though it was raised to “high” in the communities of Middleboro and Carver following recent testing.
