Charter Review Committee to hold public meeting

What's Ahead for Wareham?

Jan 26, 2010

The Charter Review Committee has prepared a recommendation that Wareham move to a town council plus mayoral form of government, details of which will be available at an informational meeting scheduled to be held at the Wareham Middle School on February 6th at 1 p.m.  Guest speakers including Joe Powers, Town Clerk, Town of Braintree; Donna Holaday, Mayor, City of Newburyport; Lucien Poyant, former Member of the Charter Commissions, Town of Barnstable; and Dick Silva, former Chair of the Charter Commission, Town of Plymouth; will gives us a sense of how this form of representational democracy works for their respective towns.  Please attend; and please come with questions for our guests.  Len Gay of Onset will moderate the meeting.

Mark your calendar, also, for the next meeting, at 1 p.m. on February 20th at the Middle School.  This event will be a public forum where attendees can ask more specific questions about how the governmental changes would impact Wareham, express approval or concerns, and suggest refinements to the proposal.  A moderator has not yet been determined.

If the Charter Review Committee's proposal to change to a town council plus mayoral form of government is accepted at the April Town Meeting, it will then have to be approved by the State Legislature.  If this approval is granted, then the issue will be placed on the ballot for Wareham voters to accept or reject.
