Wilderness bike ride raises money for Kiwanis

A number of bike riders braved the heat wave Saturday to raise money for kids and get a closer look at growing cranberries.

The air was heavy with humidity when cyclists arrived at the Cranberry Wilderness Bike Ride hosted by the A.D Makepeace Company and the Bourne-Wareham Kiwanis Club.

The event both raised money for the Kiwanis and gave cyclists a chance to ride through the bogs and learn about cranberries along the way.

"It's an international organization made of 100% volunteers," said Bourne-Wareham Kiwanis board member Lisa Simmons. "We have several children's efforts in our community," including community service programs at Wareham High School.

The course was a colorful one.

"The course itself goes through the core of the A.D. Makepeace Company,"said Kim Houdlette of the A.D. Makepeace Company.

There were pit stops along the way for cyclists to grab cranberry juice, water, or Craisons. Bike repairs, if needed, were completed by Serious Cycles of Plymouth.

"They're out there on the route for any bike maintenance people might need," said Houdlette.

Afterwards there was a "yoga cool down" hosted by Wareham-based Yoga Light Studios.

Although the humidity may have kept some people away, the trail gave cyclists a great glimpse into the woods of Southeast Massachusetts.
