Winter blues mount as snowfall totals climb
If you think the snow this year has been particularly unremitting, it's not in your head. In the six weeks since winter blew in, Mother Nature has dumped 31.4 inches of the white stuff on Wareham.
In January alone, Wareham got more than 21 inches of snow, nearly tripling last January's numbers, according to Debbie Cannon of the UMass Cranberry Station, which keeps track of snowfall amounts in Wareham.
"We are above average for this time of year," Cannon said. According to the Cranberry Station's data, winter 2011 is already one for the books with snowfall totals inches behind winter 2005 and the snowiest winter in 1996. And it's only February.
January was ranked as the third snowiest in state history, or the equivalent of 240 shovels and 1,500 bags of road salt sold, according to employees of Onset Village Hardware. Forty-three inches would have been the number needed to earn the title of snowiest January, set in 2005. Still, this year's totals weren't too shabby. At month's end, the Bay State averaged 38.3 inches, according to the National Weather Service.
With more snow comes more headaches for residents.
"I've had about enough," Christina Crocker of Wareham said on Tuesday. "It's a lot of snow. And now we're getting more tomorrow. We just keep shoveling. I have shoveled this about a million times," she said while standing outside her business, Frankenstein's Hot Dogs and More, located on Main Street.
The messy roadways and sky-high snow banks are taking a toll on drivers. Breakdowns and vehicle extrications have been on the rise this season, according to Vaughn's Towing & Service in Wareham. That statistic is reflected by the 28 weather-related crashes recorded by the Wareham Fire Department since December 21, eight of which occurred during a single ice storm on January 18.
The rest of the town's commuters don't have it any easier.
"It's miserable weather. I hope it all ends soon and I hope to get into the nice sun," said Lisa Bibbo, who was waiting for the bus on Main Street Tuesday afternoon. "I'm jumping up and down, trying to keep warm."
As you dust the last specks of snow from your car from this mid-week storm, more will be on the way. Forecasters predict another round of snow coupled with freezing rain could be headed our way Saturday.
