There were many accomplishments to celebrate during the WCTV's annual meeting held at Salerno's Function Hall on Wednesday night, including the hiring of a full-time employee and expansion of coverage in Wareham.

After the re-election of Jim Bruce to the board for a three-year term and a quick run-down of the past year's finances (which was $16,000 under budget) WCTV members celebrated the station's newest addition to the crew, Queen Banda, as the outreach coordinator.

"She's doing what we want to do, which is get out into the community, beat the doors down, get involved, and report on our town," said Executive Director Steve Ruiz.

WCTV recognized its Volunteer of the Year, Walter Cruz, for his involvement in the station for the past year.

Christian Fernandes explained WCTV's new involvements in the Wareham Public Schools. He is now the AV Advisor for the high school. The club began with five members and is now at 17 members who film sports, dances, events and more.

"I have kids come up to me every day asking me, 'How can I work at WCTV and make my own show like the [interns] did last summer?'," said Fernandes. "So we're going to have ongoing interns and kids eager to learn."

The station also has a partnership with DECA. It donated computers and painted a green screen that all 12 DECA classes use. Students have created promotional videos that showcase the work DECA students do.

This past summer, WCTV employees taught 24 students in two CARE classes about creating videos. The CARE program is part of Beyond School Time in the Wareham Public Schools, providing six weeks of classes to students during the summer.

Renee Walsh and Banda created videos to present at the annual meeting: Walsh showed off some footage taken with a drone and Banda highlighted all the different people in Wareham she has met.

WCTV is currently working on expanding its building, located at 505 Main St. Ruiz said the station is still in the process of securing a lease.
