‘Buddy Bench’ to help kids find friends at recess
Fourth graders at Minot Forest are working to make sure everyone is included at recess with a new “Buddy Bench.”
The bench, which will be added to the playground, is a place for students to go when they don’t know what to do at recess, or are looking for friends to play a game with them.
“A buddy bench is a place where you can always find a friend when you need one,” reads one slide in a presentation prepared by the students.
The bench was built by Phillip Dwayne, who donated it to the school. It was painted by teachers Heather Nash and Christina Slaza, and the students in both classes added their handprints to show that they are all a part of the project.
Several quotes about friendship are also painted on the bench, including “If you want a friend, then be one,” “We rise by lifting others,” and “Kindness can turn a bad day good and a good day better!”
The students also brainstormed conversation starters they could use with kids at the bench, including asking if the student is feeling okay, would like to join in with their friends, or what the student likes to do during recess.
The bench is dedicated to all the students at Minot Forest.
