Mill Pond Diner reopens

May 23, 2013

While there's still some legal wrangling to be done behind closed doors, the Mill Pond Diner is back in business.

After the owner of the Old Company Store, John Assad, cemented the diner’s line to their shared sewer hook-up, a back-up forced the diner to shut its doors on Monday, May 13.

"We've tied into our [old] septic system for now. ... I have to have it pumped every day," says Mill Pond Diner owner Lorrain Goyette.

The Assads say that Goyette's deceased husband, William "Biff" Goyette, had a "gentleman's agreement" with the Assad family to either pay the bill or give them a parcel of land.

The matter has been going back and forth in civil litigation for about six months. Goyette's husband died in February 2011.

According to Sandy Assad, the diner's usage represents 75% of the system's total usage, and Goyette owes what Assad calls "a considerable amount" on the bill.

Goyette notified the Board of Health, and had a professional cleaning crew clean the diner after the incident.

"We've been closed for ten days. They [the staff] scrubbed this place from top to bottom; this place is immaculate," Goyette said. "If it wasn't for them I couldn't have opened."
